Kathleen Hawks nee Berry
London and Westport
Kathleen Hawks (nee Berry), London and Westport. The death happened on September 22, 2007 working in london of Mrs Kathleen Hawks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], formerly Kathleen Berry, late of The Fairgreen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Westport.
Kathleen was the first-born daughter of the late Edward and Annie Berry. She was created on May 19, 1921,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an unforgettable day in local history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your day from the Kilmeena Ambush. In the following years she was accompanied by her brothers and sisters and she or he spent memories about the Fairgreen directly into her teenage life.
Kathleen received her primary education in the Mercy Primary School on Altamont Street and, while there, she completed an industrial course. She'd a reputation like a happy child, a wonderful and capable young lady who became another mother to her siblings.
Once the Reliable Shoe Company opened in Westport she was appointed to the staff and was one of a preliminary number of workers given special learning that which was then Peter O dance hall in the Fairgreen. She perfected the skill of boot and shoe making and was quickly promoted to the position of forelady with the company.
Sadly, when the factory was destroyed by fire, Kathleen along with a quantity of other employees needed to emigrate to find employment.
She found work in Slough, Buckinghamshire, earning good money due to her skills like a trained machinist. World War II was waging throughout Europe at the time.
In 1945 at the end of hostilities, she successfully applied for a situation using the English Civil Service. It was within this job that they met the passion for her life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Harry Hawks. He was among the volunteers who joined up in the outbreak of the war. He served in France and was later one of the soldiers who fought in the retreat at Dunkirk where, despite being seriously wounded,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he made his way to England where he recovered from his injuries. He was demobbed and then joined the Civil Service.
Kathleen and Harry soon married and set up home working in london. They were married just eight years when Harry died, apparently in the war injuries he received at Dunkirk. Kathleen was now a war widow at age 38 years with three young children, Edmund,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Noel and Ian to rear. Her home was in the suburban areas based in london with courage, good housekeeping and several other skills, she reared her sons to adulthood.
While rearing her family she were able to save enough money annually for any family holiday in her native Westport. She and her boys were a feature of the Irish summer within the County Mayo town and, because the boys got to know their Westport cousins, their mother became Auntie Kathleen to a growing number of nephews and nieces.
She educated the boys in London and saw her two eldest graduate in art and engineering using the youngest taking an appointment as postman with Royal Mail,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
As her sons made their careers and chose their partners in everyday life, Kathleen used her extra free time to create more frequent visits to Westport. Among her great joys ended up being to walk beaches at Bertra and Old Head together with her brother, Joseph, now also sadly deceased.
Inside a letter written to her sons in 1994 and sealed until her death she requested that her ashes be buried with the passion for her lifetime, Harry, and that a Memorial Mass be celebrated in St Mary Church, Westport. Both requests were granted. Her Mass in Westport was on Sunday, October 7. Her funeral at Elmers End was a truly full Irish funeral with all of her family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her Irish family and neighbours give celebrate her lifetime.
Her sons and grandchildren read the lessons and prayers from the faithful and all sorts of present gathered later in the Catholic Club where refreshments were served.
In her own letter to her sons, written 12 years earlier but revealed only after her death,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she wrote of how they all appreciated the welcome they received from the Berry family every time they visited Westport. really were diamonds, God love and bless them all />
She added - I'd like is really a nice, simple funeral - a spray of flowers from my grandchildren. Anyone that wishes can make a donation to St Christopher Hospice. I'd like my ashes buried with my dear Harry, the passion for my entire life. We'd a brief but happy wedded life and that we really loved one another. I want you all to be good to each other and don cry for me. Think rather than the happy times we had - I really like all of you and need you the very best in life. Enjoy life just like Used to do />
