Post Australia to see Venus cross the Sun
Australia to see Venus cross the Sun,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
On June 6 the planet will cross in front of the Sun in an historical and scientifically significant event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The next transit will not occur until 2117.
Sydney Observatory's Senior astronomereducator Geoff Wyatt said: "A transit of Venus occurs in pairs eight years apart, with approximately one pair every century.
"This year's transit follows an exceptional one in June 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Keen observers will be able to see the transit from the time the planet moves in front of the disc of the Sun (approx 8.16am) until it leaves about six and a half hours later (approx 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].44pm).
Sydney Observatory warns that people should not look directly at the Sun and advises to plan ahead for safe viewing of the transit.
"The transit of Venus should only be viewed safely through a solar telescope,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], solar binoculars or special solar glasses.
"Sydney Observatory will have both solar telescopes and binoculars with solar filters available for optimal viewing.
"In the lead up to the transit we will also offer sessions on how to safely view the transit from home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Wyatt said.
The Transit of Venus has fascinated astronomers for centuries. During the 18th and 19th centuries, astronomers and explorers set out on long and dangerous journeys to faraway places to observe this rare event. It was the transit of 1769 that brought Captain James Cook to the South Pacific and then on to claim New South Wales for the British crown.
The 1874 transit was significant for Sydney Observatory, with then Government Astronomer Henry Chamberlain Russell taking on the responsibility for observation and measurement for the eastern side of Australia. His published observations brought global recognition to the Observatory.
