Tables have turned as Canadian teams grow stronger
clubs either can't find a buyer or are unable to attract decent bids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
This business reality was again highlighted this week by rumours concerning a spectacular $1.3 billion transaction between Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment and Rogers Communications over a bundle of sports properties including the Maple Leafs, NBA Raptors and Toronto FC of Major League Soccer.
This intense speculation arrived just one year after the Molson family, led by youthful Geoff Molson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], repurchased controlling interest in the Montreal Canadiens as part of an enormous $575 million transaction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the largest ever deal involving an NHL team.
Edmonton billionaire Daryl Katz, meanwhile, bought the Oilers for $200 million in February 2008 after upping his bid four times, while the Aquilini brothers purchased the Vancouver Canucks in 2004.
In Calgary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ownership group remains largely intact, but Murray Edwards has now become the most prominent member. Edwards is now a member of the NHL board's powerful executive committee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while former NHL chairman Harley Hotchkiss has taken a step back with both the league and the team.
The changes with the Canadian teams are occurring at the same time there's a sense of shifting power within the NHL board and a group of franchises - Phoenix,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Atlanta, Dallas and possibly Buffalo - on the selling block.
In fact, the league has owned the Coyotes, a team that was prevented from being moved to Hamilton by billionaire Jim Balsillie and is now coveted by the City of Winnipeg. Meanwhile the Stars and Colorado Avalanche, once seen as rich vanguards of the NHL's new frontier, are now among the league's worst drawing clubs.
While longtime stalwarts like Hotchkiss and Detroit's Mike Ilitch have reduced their activity at the board level, individuals like Minnesota owner Craig Leipold are being viewed as rising power brokers. It's intriguing that while Leipold's stock rises,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dallas owner Tom Hicks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], owner of a team that moved from Minnesota, is set to sell his club because of financial problems.
While the Avalanche struggle, there's movement afoot to build a new area in that team's former home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Quebec City, and attract a new NHL club.
New Tampa Bay owner Jeff Vinik is also viewed as an up-and-comer. Chicago tandem of chairman Rocky Wirtz and president John McDonough are seen as influential now - although they don't wield the power that Bill Wirtz, Rocky's father,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had during his heyday as chairman of the board of governors.
While politics and alliances shift among the NHL governors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], key issues like the impending sale of the Coyotes, a new collective bargaining agreement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], new leadership at the NHL Players Association and the future of NHL involvement in the Olympics are all moving to the front burner quickly.
Clearly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the potential sale of the league's most valuable franchise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Leafs, could create a brand new dynamic, particularly if Rogers' interest turns into a bidding war involving other wealthy Canadian interests. The Leafs are viewed as quiet loyalists at the board level, but that could change with a new,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], aggressive ownership with a different attitude than the current majority owners, the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan.
