Many of the teams played in tiny arenas that would have been better-suited for high school basketball. In that first year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Pipers finished the season with a 54-24 record and ended up winning the league's first championship. They defeated New Orleans in seven games to take the title.
InnovationThose running the ABA knew that competing against the NBA would be difficult, but they thought they had an opening because the more established league appeared to be quite conservative. Instead of running up and down the court and playing fastbreak basketball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most teams slowed it down and tried to use set plays to score. The ABA wanted its players to run whenever possible. The league also added the 3-point shot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which soon became a basketball staple. Any shot taken beyond an arc painted on the floor that was 23 feet from the rim was worth three points. The ABA added the dunk contest to its all-star festivities. Finally, the league's red, white and blue basketball created a hypnotic image as it spun out of a player's hand and flew toward the rim.
Star PlayersThe ABA had a difficult time competing with the NBA for the best players because it simply didn't have the money to offer in salaries. Julius "Dr. J" Erving was probably the best of the bunch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], playing primarily for the New York Nets. Connie Hawkins started his pro career in the ABA and became known as one of the great dunkers of all-time. George "Ice" Gervin starred for the San Antonio Spurs and became one of the great shooters in basketball history. The Indiana Pacers became one of the dominant teams in the league behind power forward George McGinnis and that team's battles with the Kentucky Colonels and 7-foot-4 center Artis Gilmore were memorable. Roger Brown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Dan Issel and Moses Malone all became wonderful stars who brought the fans to their feet.
NBA MergerLate during the 1975-76 season it was announced that the New Jersey Nets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Indiana Pacers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets would join the NBA for the 1976-77 season. The rest of the ABA teams -- including the defending champion Kentucky Colonels -- would disband. The ABA had little choice but to join the NBA as two of its teams had folded in the middle of the season. It was clear that the ABA had run out of money and that the league would not be able to continue. Many of the players from the Colonels and the two other ABA teams that were not included in the merger were signed by NBA teams.
