Post Cozy Carol in Newtown
Cozy Carol in Newtown
For most children -- before the movies and television appropriated it -- the introduction to Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" came in reading the classic or having it read to them.
I remember as a kid being absolutely enthralled with the story,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Dickens was such an accomplished master at creating characters and describing settings that the whole of London came to vivid life in his words,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Carol" was originally a story to be read, not seen. Though the various productions that Hollywood and television have contributed to its identity are marvelous in themselves, nothing beats sitting around a fire, hearing the story read aloud.
If tears don't well up in your eyes at the end, with Tiny Tim's blessing for us all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you've got the makings of a Scrooge yourself!
The in Newtown is staging a cozy version of the story that pares it down to the essentials without losing too much of the color or complexity of the classic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Adapted from Dickens by Maine playwright and directed by ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the production opens with a young school boy () reading the story to himself and magically being transported into the action.
,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a veteran of Town Players productions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has the role of the miserly Scrooge. He gives it a dandy interpretation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with enough meanness for us to initially detest him and then sufficient sorrow for his sins to invoke compassion.
Malyszka is the only cast member who has but one role. The supporting cast of five -- Boyle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], , and -- play multiple parts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as handling bits of narration that links scenes together.
Young Boyle gives a confident performance,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the others -- as Ghosts, Cratchits, and various Londoners -- seem comfortable filling the shoes of Dickens' well-loved and memorable characters.
For atmosphere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's an on stage fiddler (),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who provides some pleasant melodies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and a visible sound and light manager (Kevin Braun). Their work contributes to a sort of improvised staging that puts most of the attention on the words -- as it should.
