This is where Maida Mrakovic, 28, works two to three days a month. Blonde and petite, in her sneakers she looks more like a teenager on her way to the gym than a prison nurse.
You'd guess it would be a stressful job, providing health care to prisoners. You'd imagine fearing for your safety, that the work environment would be tense and unfriendly. You'd assume that working in a jail would feel like being in jail.
"It's nothing like that," says Mrakovic. "It's like one big family. The staff all works together. The guards all know your name and look out for you."
Of the nearly 350,000 nurses in Canada, 700 work in corrections. A large percentage of those work there part-time. Most of Maplehurst's 150 nurses are like Mrakovic: they heard about the job from a friend.

Born in Bosnia, Mrakovic moved with her family to Etobicoke when she was a teenager. She and her husband, an accountant with Scotiabank, still live there. At Credit Valley, Mrakovic works two 12-hour day shifts, followed by two 12-hour night shifts followed by five days off. In those fives days, she works at Maplehurst. "It's not for the money. It's for the experience. I want to do as much nursing as I can."
Mrakovic is also a volunteer with the Canadian Medical Assistance Team. In 2005, she went to Pakistan for almost a month to assist people affected by the earthquake.

Motherhood has not changed Mrakovic's interest in what might be perceived as high-risk nursing. Her husband, she says, is not so sure he wants her in disaster zones but, as Mrakovic says, "We'll see. I can't imagine stopping." She can't quite put her finger on precisely why she needs to do it. But it has something to do with the basic job description of a nurse, which is to help improve people's health. All people.
