Oscar Pistorius love of weapons comes into focus as athlete stands accused of murdering girlfriend
Today, he stands accused of murder after his former FHM model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot to death in the early hours of Valentine's Day.
As South Africa and the wider world shared their disbelief over the tragedy involving the Paralympic champion, Pistorius lifestyle and love of weapons was brought into focus.
Pistorius,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], known as the Runner for the artificial legs that powered him to world fame as a disabled athlete, is alleged to have fired four times into Steenkamp's head, chest and arm at his home in Pretoria.
The 26yearold prepared to answer a murder charge and apply for bail at Pretoria magistrates court on Friday morning local time. It's usually safe in guarded estates like this until that happens. The Guardian newspaper reports that Pistorius posted a photograph of himself at a shooting range in November 2011 on Twitter, boasting about his score: "Had a 96% headshot over 300m from 50 shots! Bam!"
His love of shooting was well known and he appeared in a Nike advertising campaign where he was pictured with the slogan: "I am a bullet in the chamber." The advert has been removed from his website,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
He told the New York Times magazine last year that he pulled a pistol to search his home when his alarm went off the night before an interview with a journalist from the newspaper.
Pistorius took the journalist to a nearby target range where they fired at targets with a 9mm pistol. In November last year he tweeted: "Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and thinking it an intruder to go into full combat recon mode into the pantry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!"
Steenkamp, who had only dated Pistorius for a few months, was also on Twitter. Ahead of Valentine Day she wrote: "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? . It should be a day of love for everyone:) may it be blessed!"
She was quoted by South Africa's Sunday Times last week as saying her boyfriend was "an impeccable man who always has her best interests at heart".
Steenkamp was shot at around 3am in Pistorius's house. News agencies report that paramedics were already at the scene when police arrived and Steenkamp was pronounced dead. A 9mm pistol was recovered and there was soon yellow police tape around the grey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], modern twostorey house and crosses marking each door.
Police said the couple were the only people in the house at the time and there was no sign of forced entry. Neighbours had apparently heard "screaming and shouting" around the time of the shooting, and police added they had been called to investigate incidents of a "domestic nature" at the house previously.
In 2009, Pistorius had been arrested and spent the night at a police station after being accused of assault although charges were dropped because of lack of evidence.
Pistorius was questioned by police regarding Reeva Steenkamp death on Thursday and left the station with the hood on his grey sweatshirt pulled up, hiding his face from camera shot.
Trish Taylor, the mother of Pistorius exgirlfriend Samantha Taylor, wrote on Facebook on Friday: "I am so glad that Sammy is safe and sound and out of the clutches of that man there were a few occasions where things could have gone wrong with her and his gun during the time they dated. My condolences to the family whose daughter has passed away. My heart breaks for you".
Henke Pistorius,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Oscar father, told SABC radio news he didn know anything about the incident, adding will be extremely obnoxious and rude to speculate. I don't know the facts. If anyone makes a statement, it will have to be Oscar. He's sad at the moment."
In an interview with eNews Channel Africa, Mike Steenkamp, the uncle of Reeva,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said: "I must just say that her future has been cut short. The family are devastated.
"How it pans out, at the end of the day we will all know the true story. We must never forget what Reeva stood for. She loved people, she loved everybody, her heart went out. At least we know exactly what she accomplished in the past.
"It's a devastating shock. Her whole life, what she could achieve, never came to fulfilment. I hope she's with the angels."
Pistorius had both of his legs amputated below the knee before he turned one because of congenital condition.
He made history by becoming the first doubleamputee track athlete to compete in the Olympics and was named by Time Magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people last year in the leadup to the London Games.
