Texas A surprises Mississippi State with 38
Scientists cannot explain how, aerodynamically, a bee shouldn't be able to fly. The bee does not know this, so he (or she) flies anyway. Statistically, probability-wise,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and just plain common sense-wise, the Texas A football team should not be breaking records every week in their debut year in the SEC. The Aggies do not know this, so they continue their march towards a strong freshman year in their new conference home, anyway. Today's solid showing of 38-13 against Mississippi State University, the Ags' second week of road-trip games, seems to be silencing the naysayers, one game at a time.
At the beginning of the nationally televised game on ESPN, the matchup was even enough, with Mississippi State ranked 17th and the Aggies ranked 16th, yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Bulldogs' offense was expected to put more points on the board. The Aggies held a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and went to the locker room at 24-0 at halftime. The third quarter was even with a touchdown each,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the Aggies simply dominated the game with offense with 361 yards rushing and 332 passing. On the ground or in the air, Manziel continued to protect his stats as leading passer and leading rusher in the SEC this week.
It's offensive to hear the term "Johnny Football" repeated as the reason for the Ags' success. There's no question this young man is talented,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and yes, he had over 400 yards of offense today, but there is the small matter of 10 other guys on the field who are each contributing their very best to get those yards racked up. Despite the obvious omission of coming up with a clever term for the offense (how about those Aggies?),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], national and local television broadcasters wear that "Johnny Football" term out like an old sofa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], night after night, ad nauseum.
It probably wouldn't be too far afield to opine that Manziel likely hates that term, for obvious reasons. Even so, it's appropriate to celebrate Manziel's play today with the accompanying Chuck Berry video anthem, "Johnny B. Goode." Go ahead and sing along; you know you want to. Get that out of your system? Now, back to the stats and facts.
The secret to the Ags' success is founded on the coaching team assembled by the cool-as-ice Kevin Sumlin is the reason, as well as the defensive strategists he picked, led by Mark Snyder, TAMU defensive coordinator. Knowing how to coach these talented SEC newbies has paid off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], week after week, ever exemplified by Dante Hall's pickoff of Tyler Russell's pass,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that could have brought Mississippi State closer to (potentially) being in the game after the Ags lost a touchdown opportunity on a controversial goal-line call.
On offense, it's Kliff Kingsbury and his hurry-up, no-huddle offense that gives the Aggies a decided edge, just as it used to when Kingsbury played for Texas Tech, under the expert tutelage of Mike Leach. Personally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it was rewarding to hear ESPN's sports announcers whose names were "not Craig James" note the talents of former Tech coach Mike Leach, as the mentor to Kingsbury.
Johnny Manziel is definitely one of the most gifted athletes on the Aggie roster, and his ability to read the opposing defense is something he's worked on all his life, but it is hopeful that every person who is even thinking of uttering "Johnny Football" learn the names of the entire offensive line as well as the coaches on the sidelines who are the most unsung heroes of the group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], week after week.
Today, Ben Malena earned the non-existent award of the "guy who simply would not drop when tackled" as he was a workhorse for 112 yards. Christine Michael was dynamic in all 52 yards of his powerful rushing. Of course, Manziel led the rushing yards with 129, followed by Malena at 112, Michael at 50, Thomas Johnson for 33, Trey Williams for 24, and Brice Dolezal for 15.
And then there were the wide receivers. Ryan Swope and Mike Evans ran for their lives and pulled away from one, two, and three would-be Mississippi State tacklers at a time as they combined for 218 yards. Fourteen more catches were also garnered by Thomas Johnson, Ben Malena, Uzoma Nwachukwu, Malcome Kennedy, Kenric McNeal, J. Stewart, and Michael Lamothe.
Doubtless, the balance ground and air games orchestrated by Sumlin and his excellent coaches dominated the game, but the defensive play is equally as dynamic in giving the offense so many minutes of regulation play. The kicking game will be a continued source of "needs improvement" as Taylor Bertolet made one of three field goal attempts for 24 yards and had one blocked. That's the way it goes on Saturday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the kicker is either the hero or the problem, but there's seven more days until Alabama. Next week's third of three road trips will showcase the Aggies against their greatest possible threat against the projected number one team in the BCS. "We'll make sure our guys know what league they're in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what is expected of them, I think that's a process. I've been a part of teams that are favored to win, and others that are the underdog. You don't coach any differently." Those remarks are far more important to echo than to babble aimlessly about Texas A debut of "special black uniforms" this week on national television.
"With Mississippi State receiving a special exemption to wear white uniforms at home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we were approached by adidas with an opportunity to do something very exciting and distinctive for this game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without straying too far away from our traditional look,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Texas A head football coach Kevin Sumlin said. "I know the players are pumped and ready for this big game, and I think the recruits will like the new look."
Yeah, that's pretty much what is important to the Aggie fans-what adidas thinks. Maroon and white have been the Aggie football colors since the late 1920s so today threw that beloved 80-year tradition into the trash can, together with singing the Aggie 100-year-old fight song about a team that the Ags no longer play (for now).
The way things are going, it could just be a matter of time-if the Aggies don't watch it-that the Aggie dance team and the pom-poms and maybe even megaphones and gymnasts will find their way to Kyle Field, soon to be renovated, again. Someone from the Aggies student committee on preserving traditions ought to hang out in the athletics offices more often; hide and watch, the Aggies in the SEC are trying to go bigtime. Don't forget who brought you to the dance, Aggies; don't lose the maroon and white, please, and as always, Gig 'em.
