DANBURY -- junior ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has friends in wheelchairs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wanted to know what they experienced.
So for a speech arts class assignment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she spent the day in a wheelchair.
"I wanted to be my friends for a day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' the 16-year-old said. "Getting through doors was way difficult and some of the stares you get from people are degrading."
Her classmate, Yasmely Duran, also 16, found people treated her differently in a wheelchair.
"My friends said `I'll push you.' They want to help me and think I can't do anything because I'm in a wheelchair,'' Duran said. "The stares take away everything from me. In the hallway,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when kids are passing by they look at you as if you are nothing.
"I've been one of those who look at people in wheelchairs and treat them differently. I know that's wrong and that they're not different,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' she said. "I wanted to learn the difficulties that they have as they pass through the school and now I understand how they feel. Maybe we can teach how to be around people without making them feel like they are nothing."
The two girls are among dozens of speech arts students who are fulfilling a special assignment called "Walk a Mile in my Shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
This assignment came out of a conversation teacher had with member .
"The objective was to simulate being in someone else's shoes. How they simulate that is up to them,'' NeJame said. "They have to go beyond the traditional research paper."
The students came up with a variety of simulations including handicaps, homelessness and language barriers to understand other peoples' struggles.
Senior , 17,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is leading a group simulating eating disorders, and will make a presentation about the issue as part of the assignment.
Her sister,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hannah, died Jan. 17 at 19 after suffering from an eating disorder for years.
"It's not walk in my shoes. It's walk in my life," McKay said. "She was bulimic and anorexic and I was anorexic. A lot of people opened up to me about eating disorders since the death of my sister. They want to be better. They saw that my sister was happy go lucky and they see it's not something to fool around with, that it's your life."
Sixteen-year-old junior and other students went to Main Street twice to understand homelessness. One day they went with $1 each, and spent the afternoon searching for cans to recycle. They cashed in 15 cans and pooled their money for three pieces of pizza that they shared after 11 hours of fasting.
Classmate ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 17, a senior, was among the students trying to understand homelessness.
"In living in such a diverse community and United States we are so caught up in our own lives that we don't realize what is going on in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "Even in a diverse high school, there is so much hatred that it's hard to understand it unless you walk in their shoes. The only way to get rid of hatred is to understand the other side."
Yuly Estevez, a 16-year-old senior, thought she was returning to the familiar when she sat in on a class for non-English speakers, but she was surprised by her experience.
"I came here five years ago from the Dominican Republic and it was a really hard journey. I didn't know any English,'' she said.
Estevez, who speaks Spanish,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was embarrassed for not understanding English but worked hard and by the end of her first year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and she understood what she needed to.
But when she sat in a class for this assignment, she didn't know they would be Portuguese-speaking students.
"I couldn't understand anything they were saying,'' she said. "For me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I felt that remembering was my way to not forget that it was hard. I want to let other people know what it feels like because I went through it."
