Boise State fires athletic director Gene Bleymaier as school faces sanctions
"I did not come to this decision lightly," Kustra said in a statement. "After a careful management review and discussions about the way forward for this program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I determined that new leadership is going to be needed as we commit ourselves to the highest level of attention and enforcement of NCAA standards, and also still move Boise State athletics one stage further of success."

The 57-year-old Bleymaier told The Associated Press he met with Kustra last Thursday for 30 minutes and lobbied to maintain his job, but wasn't successful.
"I did tell him which i wanted to stay, and i believe he knows that I'm very disappointed," said Bleymaier, noting he'd anticipated finishing out his professional career at Boise State. "We're very happy with what we have been able to do within my time."
The NCAA hasn't announced whether even tougher sanctions will be imposed from the university. School administrators have said they feel the self-imposed penalties, which include a three-year probation period and steps to boost its compliance office, will satisfy the NCAA.
"I was relayed through President Kustra that his decision is predicated on the confidence level he believes he needs to have as president in the university's compliance operations throughout an NCAA probationary period," Bleymaier said.
The football sanctions are part of a broader penalty package put in place by university officials for violations that also involve women's and men's tennis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and track and field. An NCAA inquiry as well as an internal investigation by the school identified 22 infractions and an absence of institutional controls essential to fully adhere to rules governing collegiate athletic programs.
The university's 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],500-page reaction to the NCAA details a number of "secondary" violations by football staff throughout a four-year period. In that time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coaches arranged for incoming players to obtain cheap transportation, meals and housing during voluntary summer workouts. The report states 63 prospective players received those benefits, valued at less than $5,000.
Bleymaier has stated the university issued a letter detailing the rules to football coach Chris Petersen and his staff and put new rules in position to safeguard against future offenses.
Petersen, who had been named head coach in 2005, said he'd continually be grateful for the opportunity given to him by Bleymaier.
"He did some amazing things here with athletics at Boise State,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Petersen said in a statement.
Bleymaier was raised in Los angeles but gone to live in Boise like a senior in high school. He returned to California to go to college and obtain a law degree. He was back in Boise as well as on campus almost 30 years ago, and took over as athletic director annually later. He guided the Broncos through their transition to Division I-A in football in 1996,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a set of stadium expansions as well as their rapid rise to prominence within the last decade.
And that he was the spearhead behind the choice to put down blue turf in Bronco Stadium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], giving Boise State a signature that's now part of every marketing tool the university uses.
Aside from the football team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the men's tennis program and women's track and field programs have committed similar secondary violations. The university is cutting scholarships and imposing recruiting restrictions for track and field and reducing practices and eliminating bonuses this year and 2012 for that head men's tennis coach.
The women's tennis team lost three scholarships for 2011 as well as in 2012,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was fined $5,000 and has had practice time reduced. They will even vacate all wins and records for matches involving an ineligible player throughout the 2008-09 season.
